A for profit Dr, here is my experience.
-First time we went to him, my daughter was coughing a lot where cough and flu meds did not work, he send us to the Sanitorium for 3 nights to get an X-ray, tested the virus only to say it was Upper Respiratory Infection and administered Antibiotics. Bill came up to $50K, not sure how much went in his pocket. A GP could have easily used a stethoscope, hear the chest was not clear, and simply administrated Antibiotics.
After this first time, I was skeptical about this Doctors already. Hospital was not necessary, we basically just stayed at the private hospital to wait for stupid test.
-Second time my daughter has a swollen parotid gland, he first administered 10 days antibiotics, did not heal. He send us off for ultrasound, but then my daughter was already better so we didn’t go back. 6 months later, my daughter’s parotid gland was swollen again. This time he said we should have done the test 6 months ago. Now we have to rush to the hospital to do an MRI and get the blood tested. He registered us again at sanitorium for another 3 days. This time I fought back, at the hospital, I said my daughter doesn’t need to go to the hospital, the inpatient customer service called the doctor and I spoke to Dr Chow directly. He told me my daughter needs to be admitted to the hospital “because” outpatient MRI for the day was full, only Inpatient can do it the same day. That got me on fire! Why did he not give us the option to get an MRI and blood tested done else where and have the results sent back? After speaking to the MRI department, I realized that inpatient MRI scan would cost $17K per scan vs $9K per scan. The department told me MRI would be available the next day but the current day was full. Dr. Chow, did not give us the option to choose a day, he scared us by saying this could be a tumor, a surgery may be necessary and we had to go to the hospital. I called Dr. Chow back and told him I can go to the Union hospital and get an MRI done. Chow cut me off and said he aint going there. I told him you don’t need to, I just need a referral letter to get an MRI. Chow said he can’t because if he write a referral letter he needs to follow to case. Money scam?
Long story short, I went to another very caring pediatric, told him about my daughter, he wrote me a referral letter for MRI at union hospital and a blood test at a lab in central. All this done in the same day without being admitted to the hospital for standby to only wait for MRI and blood test. Chow did now give us the option, did not write me a referral for MRI/ Blood test. He was always more interested in admitting us to the hospital. It really felt like a money scam to me. He is diligent in running all the checks, but all these test did not require admission to the hospital.
